This image tries to represent the extremes of human nature, the need for increasing tolerance as civilisation becomes more all-encompassing; this compared with the vindictiveness which uses differences to justify the denial of humanity. This intolerance (and worse) is found in many guises, be it race, religion, politics, power. Civilised beings have sent others to death camps in their millions, people have been tortured, and even burnt at the stake. There are instances beyond counting and they continue in one dress or another. Living within society curtails the reality of freedom, the adoption of laws for the forbearance of everyone and this easily goes beyond to repression. The essence is to equally share the restrictions within a framework of fairness. As to the actuality of the picture: I’m sure the flaming horror of beings in torment can be seen, but above – far above - are the gentle halos of hearts which represent those lost aspirations when justice is denied.
