Description

It's presently hotter than the core of the sun in Chicago. It's been that way for several days now and the heatwave shows no signs of abating. In order to give myself a respite from the heat I've decided to post a photo from last Christmas. In this photo, we're looking south on Kimball Avenue. On the extreme left is the terminus station for the Ravenswood/Brown Line train. On the right we see the Huddle House, which is quite possibly the worst restaurant in the universe. About once every decade I eat there to remind myself not to eat there for another 10 years. Directly south of that we have a genuine Mexican tavern with genuine Mexican beer, genuine Mexicans, and a jukebox that plays a mean South of the Border version of 'I Want to Hold Your Hand.' Further south is an expensive new condo complex that is currently sitting empty. The site was formerly occupied by an abandoned factory that I'm sure once manufactured some product of some kind. A product that I would imagine is now made in China and imported into the United States. As I stare longingly at this picture I can feel it working it's cooling magic on me. Or maybe that's just the air conditioner. Photographed in the Albany Park area of Chicago on December 19th, 2009.

What a view! Yeah, it's pretty frakkin' hot here too...so this shot is particularly cool in more ways than one. I really like the POV and the snow streaks that are showing up in almost ghostly ways. Great color too! It's not as orange as normal sodium vapor and that makes it more moody I think! In short it's a great shot! And as a weird scientific doodad, the surface of the sun is actually hotter than the core...but no matter which way you slice it, it's pretty hot! And yeah, the Huddle House is the only restaurant that made me feel queasy and stomach-rumbly after I ate there...and I'm still marveling at the idea of an "extra slice of cheese with my burrito. Burrito? Cheese slice...I thought they came with grated cheese. Anyway, great and evocative shot. (Oh, and you know, based on the demeanor of a particular waitress there in conjunction with the food quality, I wonder if a more appropriate name for the place should be "The Queasy Quaalude?")

This is great work. I haven't been in the snow for quite a while - whenever we get a few inches in the local mountains I make it a point to avoid going there - there's nothing scarier than a southern California driving hitting snowy roads for the first ( or first time this year ). Anyway, I like the feel and atmosphere here. Well done.

I like the sleety effects around the overhead street lights. As a long time inhabitant of drought-ridden Southern California, no way would I go driving down that snowy street in the winter. I would probably end up crashing thru one of those storefront windows shown in this fine nighttime foto.

Your thumbnail really had me going:) Your reasoning for posting now makes perfect sense. Like your description of the neighborhood and local businesses. If I found myself standing where you took this wintery image I'd feel right at home....and probably go to the Huddle House for a burger or at least some French Fries.

I'm very much a temperate type myself..not too keen on extremes of anything! The heat sounds appalling, and this chilly pic is a bit depressing! It is so interesting to read your description, I should carry a little book of them were I ever to visit!

Oh Hun - please do send some of your heat this way on one of Chip's spacecrafts or teleporter contraptions!!! I have had enough of winter now!!! However - I LOVE the image!!! the snowflakes/rain falling just brings some magic to the shot! I had to laugh at the Huddle House where you eat once every 10 years to remind you to not eat there!!! Teehee.... I like that!

You know, they say you can't learn from other people's mistakes, but I disagree. If you and Chip tell me the food there is horrid, I'll never eat there! I can learn from your bad experience. Let's go to that place at the top of the Warp Core again and have pasta instead. Better yet ... back to Reza's. Mmmmmmmmmmm! I'll be right there. :D Love the snow in July vibe. Nicely done!

My sister recently posted a snow image for the same reason, though in her case it was from a rare snow event. Like San Antonio, Baton Rouge rarely gets snow. But we do get heat, and it really likes us and stays around for a long while! Excellent shot! I love the streaky lines of snow, the receding balls of street lights, and the sparkling lights falling from two of them! Great image and narrative!

Don't tempt fate. I've seen snow in July in my part of the world at least twice. This scene reminds me of the evening when my car pool buddies car decided to die. Dark, deep cold and cold sodium lights mocking are efforts to reach hearth and home. Quite the memory. An abandoned factory being replaced by an abandoned condo. That is a new one for me.
