Description

Tracks meet missing entryway. Here's some info I added later (I was very lazy when I first put it up) :-) The High Line railroad ran through the meat packing district. The following is from Wikipedia: "It was designed to go through the center of blocks, rather than over the avenue, to avoid the drawbacks of elevated subways. It connected directly to factories and warehouses, allowing trains to roll right inside buildings. Milk, meat, produce, and raw and manufactured goods could be transported and unloaded without disturbing traffic on the streets." This section is the Northern Spur, a horticultural preserve planted with over 7,500 native grasses and perennials. "The landscape at the Northern spur is designed to recall the self-sown landscape that grew up on the High Line after the trains stopped running...The rail tracks here once delivered goods into the adjacent refrigerated warehouse building" (www.thehighline.org) The building now houses Manhattan Mini Storage and (if Google Map is right) US Drug Enforcement Administration. Thanks for viewing and for previous comments and favs!

Fascinating history and great shot. It really was technologically advanced for it's time. Actually I think it still is. Wonderful series you have shared with us. Thanks.

A really fascinating shot. I like the bricked up entrance and the trees on the other roof that give another mystery.
