Description

These Almshouses now considered of great architectural intrest, were built by John Penrose a merchant and Mayor of Barnstaple, North Devon, over 350 years ago. The pump in the courtyard still works and the holes in the bottom left hand side of door (bottom left picture) were made by musket balls during the civil war

Great little set of four Wally. I am always afraid of calling this a collage because it could be a sort of montage, no doubt someone will put me right. I expect more balls than that have gone through that door!!

Building of this age still standing in good order just drive us Americans crazy. LOL. Hooray for your caretakers and historians.

I just loved this when I lived in England. You take a simple walk and history leaps out at you at every step! Wonderful images! The door must have been pretty new when the musket balls went through it. I imagine there were other things of a more pressing nature to worry about at the time, but I can imagine the owner being a bit irritated at the holes in his new Almshouse door.
