RIVER ... GOING ONTO WHERE?
Dark water aimlessly meandering
With no apparent purpose other than
It is; with no outrageous rapids nor
The spectacle of falls, no dreams to be
A mighty Mississippi or to join
The Hudson’s grand determination to
Contribute vastness to our Earth’s blue seas.
I sit there basking in warmth’s sunshine if
A morning says it’s fair, just listening
To tympanis of sluggard barges thump
Thump thumps on motored trips to who knows where.
Sit watching acrobatic loon’s dive deep
To fish for food; enthralled by creatures, clouds
And life insisting: “Just accept: Rejoice!”
But when I ask for meaning, nature bites
Her tongue and heaven will not answer … WHY?

Hmmmmm ... perhaps the WHY is only for your amusment and entertainment. Barges would go elsewhere if the river were not there, loons would find their lunch regardless. But we build and live near water for a reason, and perhaps your reason for living there is the same as its reason for entertaining you. Of course I could be all wet.

IT goes wherever it chooses. Users of it follow it wherever it goes. For, without it, there is no one to even ASK 'WHY'. Asking nature for 'meaning' is like asking men to ask for DIRECTIONS and asking women why they bought TEN PAIR o' SHOES ''on sale''. The one thing that gives this DUMB old man SOME semblance of inner peace, is that after this LIFE thingy on earth is over, one of two things will occur. (1) We'll ALL be DEAD forever and NOT KNOW IT .... (2) We'll ALL be ALIVE forever and will KNOW IT .... i walked along a river today and i know for me it just feels good. rivers move, with or without us.
