I love it Cath!!!

Is it perhaps what you are seeing is the reflection from inside the wine glass, because the black cup is the same?!?! 6 hours??? Wow, that is a long time. I believe it is the AO. Though AO produces very fine results it is a render time extender. This is looking very good Cath, your Carrara coming along very quickly!!!

How strange, still wonderful though

Six hours is nothing. Refractions, reflections, and settings can hike your render times considerably. I've had carrara renders hit over eight hours; My computer is three years old now, but it struggles at times with the reflective surfaces. I do think the reflective settings may be a tad high for the wine glass, but the reflections on the coffee mug are a tad bit too sharp, too. Perhaps lowering the reflective quality a bit more may make it more like the glass mug I have here at home. The lines in the reflections within the dark smoked glass are softer, not so mirror like. It's a different sort of glass they use in the mug rather than the silver material behind the glass in a mirror-it's hard to compensate for the differences (For me, that is) It's a great test render! I love carrara, I'm glad to watch your foray into 8!

Some lovely looking technical work here! To save myself time and frustration I work with a smaller render size with anti alias fast and accuracy at 4 with No Global illumination Once you got it looking right I then go big and full quality another tip is turn on full settings and just render a small area using the Camera icon Test render (X) Thats just me! Saves on hair!

Great work, Cath! Your HDR rendering looks impressive, especially for just your fifth day with Carrara. It’s a complex tool, much like an iq test free online - challenging but rewarding! Keep experimenting, and I'm sure you'll nail the reflections soon!
