Description

Norwegian Stave churches were built, starting around 1050, when Saint Olaf brought Christianity to Norway. These impressive buildings were a blend of Christian symbols and Viking images. Note the wooden dragon heads decorating the eaves. Of the estimated 1,000 Norwegian Stave churches built in the Middle Ages, only 28 survive today. Well worth a ZOOM. Another shot from a film camera and recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Impressive! Superb POV, clarity, patterns and textures in this magnificent foto, Dana! That may be Christian and Viking architecture, but it sure borders on what you might also find in Japan.

A wonderful design! It would make a great project for those British prisons where the hobby of matchstick modelling is still on the go.

This is wonderful! I'm always dismayed when history shows Christianity completely displacing native cultural identity and stamping its own on the vacant spot (thus changing an entire culture) and so I'm really happy to see something like this. A church with dragon-heads! Who would have thought it? The architecture of the church is astonishing and I'm glad this is one of the few that survived. Zooming in on this is fantastic, and I must say that this is a place I'd love to see for myself! Marvelous!
