Description

Ice cold Coke, ice cold burgers, ice cold fries... Ah, the finer points of grammar. I once saw a photo from the days before refrigeration of a restaurant advertising "cool drinks always 68 degrees." (20 C) That doesn't sound especially chilly, but in the blistering heat it must have been at least somewhat refreshing. I think to achieve 68 degrees merely meant that the drinks were stored in a cellar. I don't know the history of ice houses and such, but I suppose ice was available in many places all year. I can imagine how rare and costly ice must have been somewhere like Florida, where the nearest place to harvest it would be in the mountains, hundreds of miles away. I suppose in theory saltwater ice was always available, but would have been incredibly expensive and not the kind of thing you would want in your lemonade anyway. 68 degrees it is. Thanks to Richard_T for the burger stand and adamthwaites for the burger prop itself, both free. Much appreciated!!

The ice house on the island, they would harvest it from the fresh pond all winter long and haul it by horse sleigh to the ice house where they would pack it in sawdust to keep it through the summer. Funny image.

They would also move ice by train from up north.

And 68 degrees was indeed the cellar temperature, which would have been fairly stable. The look on her face is just priceless as she hits that frozen pattie.
