Description
Someone mentioned that I never use alien/non-human characters in any of my pieces and they're pretty much right. I guess because I tend to focus on a near Earth type future, other species and races get left out, so in the interest of fair representation - I give you the cat people of Zeta Reticuli.
Obviously this is sort of tongue in cheek, but who knows, maybe cats will evolve one day and explore the galaxies? Then again, they have it pretty good laying around all day and doing nothing, so where's the motivation?
Instead of my normal composition style, I tried to give this more of a cinematic feel, maybe like a screen cap from a film. I'm not sure what the story is, but the leader of the recently arrived cat crew appears a little irritated and the maintenance guy at the station doesn't seem to know how to help them. Not sure, but if I were him I would keep an eye on my mouse droid.
Made with Poser, Vue and Photoshop, this one finally gave me a reason to use Sanctum Art's SAK-EX figure and to pull Stonemason's venerable Dark Star out of storage. The hardest part of this one? Trying to get a convincing conversational cat expression :) Thanks for looking!

This is great! I especially love cats, and this one's got me chuckling...I'm thinking the maintance guy's arguing with the 'exterminators' (re: the mouse-droid)!

The expression and body language on the cats are superb! There's a great natural energy and life there. Your lighting design and palette are subdued but active, and they lead your eye around the composition very naturally. The little mouse droid is a wonderful touch. Its an original way to use the SanctumArt figure, thats for sure! Question: Did you scuff up and make the armor look "lived in" in post or on the actual texture maps? In either case, fun and splendid image!

Cool render! I find it interesting how attitudes concerning alien form changes with the times. When "created in god's image" was the prevailing mindset, alien forms were predominantly humanoid. Now that evolution is the more conventional mindset you see aliens taking on the shape and form of other species we find on our planet, but this time evolved to the point of being "human like". In some more rare instances, alien form is totally alien in concept. People in general can not even fathom the possibility anymore that we may in fact be alone in the universe, where once upon a time, it was the reverse. Mostly, just thinking out loud how sci fi goes through these changes to reflect the popular thinking of the day. :O)

Really fine work JCD (@texboy: Cordwainer Smith ... wow, that takes me back: memories of the '70's, my first taste of tobacco, Led Zeppelin, reading Women of Wonder, Norstrilia, & The Best of Cordwainer Smith, and a journey across the galaxy with the last living man, I refer of course to Kilgore Trout's [Philip José Farmer to those who know] Venus on the Halfshell ... all these things somehow tangled together in my mind -- and,JCD, this image does somehow capture the essence of all of this.) Very nicely done.

Brilliant work, my friend! And yes, you succeeded perfectly with the cat expression. I get the same expression from mine whenever she is displeased.
