Description
Heard the music a block away
it floated on the air
like a soft trail of smoke
full of sweet scent like clove cigarettes
Could almost taste the sugar
as it dripped off her fingers
while she played her sad song
making eye contact with me
Her hair matted from long nights
outside in the park near the water
where leaves and sticks caught in her curls
and where the mites enjoyed feeding off her flesh
while she dreamed of better places
where her stomach wasnt aching
not only from lack of food
but for lack of love....
She played a song only she knew lyrics to
ones that cried out for daddy to stop hitting her
for mommy to believe her
for someone to hear her soul crying at night
while she covered her head with the pillows
hoping she wouldnt hear his footsteps coming down the hall....
She continued to play while I captured her in my little camera,
a memory for me
a reminder to be thankful for the car that barely runs
to be thankful for the box of crackers in my cabinet,
the only food we have until payday
for at least we have food..
a reminder that when I complain that my apartment is too small
to remember that I could be sleeping outside
in the cold, but Im not
I left her five dollars
knowing she would not buy food
not the kind we eat anyway
she would feed her hunger for heroine
and feast on it until she drifted off to sleep
in the park
under the moon
who played its own sad song
just for her.....

saw her on the street, took her picture.
shes homeless and was playing for money....
she doesnt look too hungry..to me anyway. heh...
