Description
I witnessed a phenomenon at Kamakura that would occur several times during our trip. We would arrive at a place only to find it nearly empty. After about fifteen minutes or so a large group of young Japanese would arrive. The Japanese have a particular problem with the pronunciation of the letter ‘L’ and so when the youngsters arrived we would be met with choruses of “Harro, harro!” Four buses arrived at Kamakura on what appeared to be a field trip for students. As each bus came to a stop the door would open and a young woman, probably the teacher, would exit holding a flag. She would stand at the front of the bus while all the students piled out and lined up behind her. There was the purple bus, the green bus, the red bus and the yellow bus.
We were soon surrounded by young students. While we were saying our hellos a boy who looked to be around ten or twelve was pushed toward us by the crowd. Apparently he had been elected to interrogate us. Many Japanese are in the habit of forcefully sucking in air between their teeth when they are nervous or embarrassed. And so it was with our young inquisitor. “What is-a you name?” he asked Larry. “Lawrence Mark Feldman”, he replied. The young man repeated the words to catcalls from his classmates. He became even more nervous. “Where do you rrive?” “Hollywood, California.” I should state at this point that Larry had a bit of a sadistic streak in him. The young man repeated the words to more heckling and laughter. He began to blush and perspire. “What do you do?” he pressed on. “I am a librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library”, he emphasized each ‘L’. In fact I was the librarian but, as I said, Larry had that streak. That turned out to be the worst of it. The three of us that were left were much easier on him and soon their curiosity was satisfied and we were released.
If you look at the upper image, just left of center, you will see a pretty young girl with her fingers in a ‘V’ salute standing between a girl with a blue hat to her right and a girl with a
yellow hat to her left. I had planned to take her picture, just her picture, but as I raised the camera to my eye look who showed up! The bottom picture is some of the crew from the yellow bus.

Oh yes! the terrible Ls. I remember a Japanese band singing the song "Feelings". It's hard to dance a slow dance with a fit of the giggles. Two friends and I were ambushed in Kyoto by a flock of students. Excellent story! Poor little boy! Wonderful pictures of all the kids, and you were going for just one! I love all the different expressions and poses. Is the one with the 2 on her shirt a teacher? She looks older and doesn't look Japanese. Great images and narrative!

Very funny and very cute story. I can't imagine the reverse happening here. I just don't think our students could question a Japanese tourist in Japanese. Cute bunch of kids, I love the group shots. A wonderful addition to your series.
