Description
(The following is a thought experiment, I encourage you to give an answer)
Dragons do not exist. Or at the very least there is no objective evidence to support the fact that they are real or ever existed. To claim that they absolutely do exist without any proof would mean that people will consider you to be crazy because a dragon, by definition is fantasy.
Now imagine for a second that tomorrow when you step out of your house and what you see looks to be a very real dragon, with very real and sharp looking teeth on your doorstep. Now in the next instant you have to make a decision that could very well change your fate. You could trust your senses which are telling you there's a dragon right in front of you and try to either get away or duck back into your house and hope it doesn't follow you. Or you could believe what you know to be true, which is that dragons don't exist, and take a minute to pause and either clear your head or investigate.
Now one wrong answer means you could potentially die a nasty death. The other wrong answer means you could have permanent shame, embarrassment, and a potential trip to the loony bin.
You only have an instant to decide.
Is there a dragon on your doorstep or not?

It clearly all depends on whether or not I am sleeping when I step out on that doorstep. In my dream world dragons live there, I have seen them many of times. So in my dream I could clearly say yes there would be a dragon at my doorstep. But in reality in there clearly couldnt be a dragon on my doorstep but in that reality if there was a dragon on my doorstep I don't think I would try to analyze it or look for a rational explanation I would definitely slam the door and hide under the bed hoping he didnt want a snack.

There is the dragon and I would, if possible, try to befriend it and become it's partner, just as in the fantasy novels I've read (Thanks, Anne)

Nice experiment, but I think it also depends on the sort of dragon...Chinese? European? Or perhaps a real-world variant of the dragon theme: Kimodo Dragon, Australian Bearded Dragon? Okay, you didn't say that the dragon was tiny and bobbing its head up and down and eating crickets or foliage, so I can rule out Australian Bearded Dragon, though they're so incredibly cute (and funny.) Now, if it was a serpentine, grinning thing, probably a garish red or something like that, I'd count the number of claws (Five-clawed Chinese dragons are lucky and also Imperial) and a 5-clawed Chinese Dragon on my doorstep would definitely be some venerable dragon-ish personage I'd invite inside for a cup of whatever it is Chinese dragons like cups of. Five-clawed Chinese dragons are also harbingers of good fortune, and so I'd wonder if the dragon in question had the right address! Now, in terms of this thought experiment, I'd see the presence of something on my doorstep as challenging, to put it mildly, and I'd probably react in the way anybody would when confronted with an odd situation. I'd gawk. That's about it: I'd do something else, undoubtedly, but as I've never experienced anything that shifts my perception of reality, I have absolutely no idea what I'd actually do after my initial gawk...but there you have it: my really convoluted answer to your intriguing question.

Okay, I've always thought that until I don't see something with my own eyes it doesn't exist, in this case I most likely run back inside my house lock the door and look at my totem to know if I'm asleep or not....
