Description

Captured 3/13/10, at the Los Angeles Zoo in Los Angeles, California. I almost forgot about the zoo. A ZOOM view would be to your benefit. Just one of many fotos I have of these fascinating creatures. The meerkat, or suricate Suricata suricatta, is a small mammal, and a member of the mongoose family. Meerkats live in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana and in South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang" or "clan". A clan often contains about 20 meerkats, but some super-families have 50 or more members. They have an average life span of 12-14 years. It is a diurnal herpestid, weighing on average about 731 grams (1.61 pounds) for males and 720 grams (1.58 pounds) for females. Its long slender body and limbs give it a body length of 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14 inches) and an added tail length of 17 to 25 cm (7 to 10 inches). Its tail is not bushy like all other mongoose species, but is rather long and thin and tapers to a black or reddish colored pointed tip. The meerkat uses its tail to balance when standing upright. Its face tapers, coming to a point at the nose, which is brown. The eyes always have black patches around them and it has small black crescent-shaped ears that can close to exclude soil when digging. Like cats, meerkats have binocular vision, a large peripheral range, depth perception, and eyes on the front of their faces. Source: The Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia. Erestorfan: You apparently missed the humor in my title. And, you take it in stride only if you get paid big bucks. Plus, you gotta visit my gallery more often.

There was, or is, actually a whole TV show based on these critters; before that I don't think I'd ever heard of them. They do have a certain appeal!! BTW, is the LA Zoo the same one as the Griffith Park Zoo?

Oh, sweet shot of these guys; I love meerkats! We just got some at our zoo here and the ads on the radio are funny and cute, a take on those over-the-top announcers with lots of echo and special effects, with emphasis on the meerkats' cuteness...I guess you'd have to hear them to appreciate them. But this is brilliant, their expressions are priceless!

Meerkats are SO cool... There is a great T.V. Ad running here for an insurance company, where two armies of CG Meerkats wage war on each other and one 'wounded' veteran then claims insurance!!! Like yeah! So cute Harry, more! Rob

I love both of your recent shots of meerkats, but since I'm trying to sample a bit of your wonderful diversity, I'll comment on them both here. The other was wonderful with their poses looking off in different directions, but this is my favorite of the two. Beautiful capture of these cuties. I love their alert expressions and the subtle difference in the color of their coats. The one on the right looks like he has been nosing in the dirt. Beautiful portrait of some seriously cute dudes (or dudettes)!
