one thing id like to know, is how i'd go about making the blades in the turbines 3d? currently they are just surfaces

Yup, I recognise that jpeg in the background, its on my hard drive too listed under 'Cloud scapes', it's looking very good so far but don't be shy, show us the rest of it sometime soon !! ;-)
