Description
This is another view that my grandfather and dad would have had while on the downs with the sheep on Berwick downs near Hindon, south west Wilts.The track leading to the woods in the distance is known as Bake Barn and goes into the woodland at the top of the picture. This wood known as Great Ridge has the remains of a Roman road running through it. In the middle of this woodland is a place with the name of Snailcreep Hanging, repudedly the site of a breeding ground for edible snails which would have been eaten by the Romans during their occupation.

Wonderful landscape Alan and love the names for its different parts. I bet those snails slid down a treat! Lol.

Snailcreep Hanging! What a fab name! We have a place in the forest called Deadman's Bottom, and also a junction on the road to Alderholt called Baker's Hanging. I wish modern names were as exciting and descriptive. A lovely scene with a big sky.
