Description
This is a shot taken in early spring along the railway tracks (you can see a train rattling along on the left)leaving the railway station in Padova, Italy. The area is full of large sheds, warehouses, large and small workshops, some abandoned, others still working. The wall in the image fences an empty area waiting for the constructors to build when they can get the best price. Currently it hosts heaps of rotting pallets, used by the homeless and illegal aliens to warm the cold nights off. Opposite the wall there is the strongest post-anarchist social center in the region, that represents the law and order here, with the mayor's and the police's blessing. In fact, they not only represent an interesting number of voters, but also keep stray dogs in line. This is a paradise for muralists and graffiti writers.
The street along the railway tracks is also a sex market during the night, but sometimes things go very wrong. Two weeks ago a serial killer was arrested at the nearby Padova railway station: he was going to meet his third victim, an escort girl. Serial killers, however, are much less likely to kill a woman than (ex)husbands, fiancés and lovers. More women were killed this year in Italy by their partners or ex, than all the Italian soldiers killed in Irak and Afghanistan put together.
The image reminded me of a mix of hyperrealist art and photojournalism. The artist probably thought of the hard-boiled crime scenes when a prostitute's body is found near the trash bins. And women are often considered trash by their killers. I added a bit if postwork to get a bleak mood.
Hyperrealism is a genre of painting and sculpture resembling a high resolution photograph. The term is primarily applied to an independent art movement and art style in the United States and Europe that has recently developed since the early 2000s. The word Hyperréalisme was created by Isy Brachot in 1973 as a French word meaning Photorealism. It was the title of a major catalog and exhibition at his gallery in Brussels, Belgium in that year. Hyperrealism has its roots in the philosophy of Jean Baudrillard, 'the simulation of something which never really existed.' As such, Hyperrealists create a false reality that is a convincing illusion; one based upon a simulation of reality (the digital photograph). Hyperreal paintings and sculptures are an outgrowth of extremely high resolution images produced by digital cameras and displayed on computers. As Photorealism emulated analog photography, Hyperrealism utilizes digital imagery and expands upon it to create a new sense of reality.

A good picture to show how gruesome the crime is. I did not know it was so bad in Italy and Spain.

What an image! I'm reminded of the opening chapter of China Miéville's novel The City and the City in which an assumed-prostitute is found...in a slightly different pose, but as dead as this poor graffiti-woman here. I like that connection because I like that book...but anyway, this is an aside note. I like this image immensely and I love the direction you've taken with your artistic observations: the fact that you're including graffiti among more "venerable" art forms is completely gratifying to me...and on top of it, you're finding some really cool stuff. I think I'll have to just visit Padova and spend time looking for interesting stuff on walls. As always, you attach a wonderful and informative read to a wonderful and challenging image! Great work on every level, and I love the sultry, brooding feel you've added with your postwork.

Serial killers kill for the trill of the killing. they pick out the person they going to kill and kill them. now ex lovers and husbans kill by emotion. that the diff and a hit man kill for money for it a businuss for them; you know like the Mob. other kill for terror and other kill to gain land or leadership in a gang. So Serial killers is a class by themselfs. and if the killings is close together he is then not a Serial killer but on a kiling spead. it hard to tell the diff but i was watching a doc. on tv telling the diff between all the types of killers. Oh in war killing is a job too and also seft defence. The man they caught maybe a Serial killer. this is a wonderful image for a statement of what going on in life around us and how sad things are.
