Description

Slave worker 4917 of the Blue Sector had become depressed and taken to sitting on the guardrail overlooking the machinery hall. She was 34 and wanted to have a baby but no unauthorised breeding was allowed. The Daleks bred their slave workers from cloning vats and permitted conventional breeding only to slave workers showing exemplary devotion to the Dalek cause. 4917 did not have enough points to qualify. In her early twenties she had had an elicit lover but they had been caught and her lover had been exterminated, the universal solution. Now she was aware that a male slave worker from Level 42 was interested in her but she would show no encouragement by looking in his direction. She had to be cruel to be kind and did not want another extermination on her conscience. All she knew was work. When she slowed down in her forties she would surely be disposed off. Just another statistic in a joyless existence. It was a 50m drop to the machinery room floor below. It was completely forbidden to sit on the guard rail but she no longer cared. Even the Dalek understood and would not bother to exterminate her and risk damaging the city's containment. It did not matter. The complement of slave workers was more than adequate.
