Description

Many thanks for your comments on my Railings, here is a view of the bridge that they are part of. Shanks Millennium Bridge forms an integral part of the Peterborough (UK) Millennium Green Wheel; a cycle network across the city that contributes to a sustainable transport system for Peterborough. It is also part of the National Cycle Network. The bridge sweeps in a graceful curve across the River Nene at Stanground Washes and provides a new, safe, fully off-road link between Peterborough and Whittlesey for commuter and leisure cyclists, horse riders and pedestrians that is entirely in keeping with the rural surroundings. The bridge was designed and constructed and is built using weathering steel which prevents the bridge from corroding and forever eliminates the requirement for painting. It has been manufactured partly from recycled metal and was carefully designed to minimise any disturbance to birds that live and breed on the Nene Washes. Its outstanding design has been on the receiving end of several awards including -Specialist Category Winner in the Royal Fine Art Commission 2001 Building of the Year Awards -Royal Institute of British Architecture Award (RIBA) for Architecture 2001 -Commendation in the Structural Steel Design Awards 2001
