Description

Woodsman, spare that tree! Yeah, right. Captured 8/7/10, early in the morning, within walking distance of my lachrymose lair. Better viewed full size. Lots of cool patterns and textures in this sequence. This old timer was a biggie in its prime. For variety, I slowly circumvented the recently decapitated tree for various POVs in this shoot. The cut is so fresh that sawdust still covers the base. I'm not much into forest and woodsy stuff, so I was startled to see a large hole in the center of the stump, possibly the result of a circle of several relatively slender trees fused together. Arreviderci, thankx for clicking on, and for any and all favorable comments and faves.

The tree is trying to regrow. I had not noticed the hole in the middle at first, I wonder if you are right about it being a few trees growing together. Nice work Harry.

Wonderful collage Harry! Maybe a dead tree that had begun to decay from the inside. There is no bark on the inside??? Maybe termites? In any case - gone. Dana

So it is true...faeries do use the trees to enter their world underneat. Fascinating pattern of the 'ruffled' trunk.

Well-spotted! Beautiful pattern in the swirls of the grain. As far as the hole in the middle, I vote with the "dying from the inside" folks; it seems as though the juicy center just withered away. Excellent collage from the Neighborhood Chronicler!

wonderful to see this as I think you can read the life of a tree with the rings. this is wonderful work. it look like a redwood tree. A Sequoia anyway some one just looked at it and say that how they looked cut down. I google Sequoia stumps and looked. I think you may be right as many trees was trying to grow there

Read everybody's comments above. You've sparked a bit of a debate. I am not sure which side to agree with...anyway, neat collage. Like your revolving POV:)

Wouldn't it have been cool to have some 'slices' of this tree for the garden ? Nice collage!

Oh look, old dog...lets shot it.. Oh look old ..etc Get my point! This is called nature.. The tree was there WAY before any of the people who 'decided' to hack it down.. Nature should be left alone.. IF it fell onto some car, well tough.. It wasn't there before the tree and chances of that happening are SO remote... I HATE trees being cut down for any reason.. Quality shots Harry and a debate opened... Rob

I found the following on http://www.newton.dep.anl.gov/ "Almost all "hardwood" - meaning deciduous, non-coniferous trees, will develop hollow trunks if they grow large enough. The inner part of larger trees is dead wood, only the outer portion is alive. Fungi eventually find a way in through wounds like broken branches and begin to rot away the dead heartwood. A tree may live many years after this begins until it becomes completely hollowed out inside, as long as the living sapwood remains strong." J. Elliott So it looks like this was a pretty old tree, though it still had lots of life in it. I don't know the particulars, but it seems a shame it was cut down. Trees give us great beauty even in death and there are wonderful shapes and textures here! The fourth is my favorite. I love the contrast of the red against the gray, the textures of the tree trunk and the patterns made by the shape of the trunk. Lovely images!
