La Vanessa del Cardo (Vanessa cardui) è una farfalla della famiglia delle Ninfalidi.
Distribuzione
È diffusa in tutti i continenti ad eccezione dell' Antartide. In Australia invece ha una diffusione limitata a poche aree della zona occidentale, tuttavia il suo parente stretto, la Vanessa kershawi, talvolta considerata una sottospecie, è diffusa in buona parte del continente.
Migrazioni
La specie è solita passare gli inverni solo nella fascia tropicale e a volte nelle aree meridionali del Mediterraneo più calde (ad esempio in Sicilia), ma in primavera, e talvolta nuovamente in autunno, migra. Ad esempio la vediamo spostarsi dal Nord Africa e dal Mediterraneo all'Europa meridionale e centrale fino ad arrivare alla Gran Bretagna nei mesi di maggio e giugno.
Ciclo della vita
L'uovo si schiude da 3 a 5 giorni dalla deposizione. Il bruco, di colore nero, impiega da 7 a 11 giorni per trasformarsi in una crisalide. È necessario un tempo analogo per passare dallo stadio di crisalide a quello finale di farfalla. A metamorfosi avvenuta non rimane in una stessa zona a lungo: nella sua vita vola per oltre 1000 miglia. La sua apertura alare è di 2 pollici.

The Thistle Vanessa (Vanessa Cardu) is a butterfly of the family NYMPHALIDS.
Distribution
It is widespread on all continents with the exception of 'Antarctica. In Australia but has a limited distribution to a few areas of the West, but its close relative, the Vanessa Kershaw, sometimes considered a subspecies is widespread in much of the continent.
Migration
The species is only used to spend winters in the tropics and sometimes in the warmer southern parts of the Mediterranean (eg in Sicily), but in spring and sometimes again in autumn migration. For example we see the move from North Africa and southern and central Europe from the Mediterranean up to the UK in May and June.
Life cycle
The egg opens from 3 to 5 days of laying. The caterpillar, black, takes 7 to 11 days to turn into a chrysalis. We need a similar time to go from stage to the final butterfly chrysalis. A metamorphosis took place does not stay long in one area: his life flying over 1000 miles. Its wingspan is 2 inches.
