Description

In astronomy, a planetary nebula is an astronomical object that resembles a woolly appearance disk when observed at low resolution. Because of this aspect, similar to the appearance of planets, the adjective "global" has been attached, and has since been maintained to preserve the historical consistency. From more detailed observations (especially spectroscopic) is now known that planetary nebulae were in fact unrelated to planets. When a small star (less than eight solar masses) is aging and eventually consumed all its hydrogen and helium her, her heart collapses to form a white dwarf, while the outer layers are expelled by radiation pressure. These gases form a cloud of material that extends around the star with an expansion velocity of 20-30 kilometers per second (70 000-100 000 km / h). This cloud is ionized by ultraviolet photons emitted by the star which has become very hot (50 000-100 000 K). The energy gained by the gas is emitted as light of lower energy, particularly in the visible range. These are objects that evolve quickly enough, we know about 1500 in our Galaxy. They play a crucial role in the enrichment of our world, transforming the primordial hydrogen into heavier elements and expelling these new elements into the interstellar medium. Planetary nebulae are often very colorful and their images are among the most spectacular. A well-known examples of this type of object is the Ring Nebula in the constellation of Lyra hence its other name: Nebula in Lyra. source : Wikipedia I hope for all my ArtFriends, an happy Week-end !
