Description

Taken, using monochrome negative film in the days before colour photography became the norm. I was young, the stones were old, now I head for the dust while they stand firm. I probably visited Stonehenge alone on this bleak day but later I was to attend a weekend countryside course based at the Marlborough Youth Hostel. The lecturers were Leslie Grinsell - a keen and energetic outdoor archaeologist - and Nick Thomas, who was then curator of Devizes Museum but then went on to hold the same position here in Bristol. The picture is nostalgic of my youth and is presented here for the ease of reference by one of my Florida friends. They were carefree days. We could wander without restraint. Nowadays supervision is the norm, and possibly needful, for a close inspection will show a youngster standing on one of the stones. I doubt if his imprint survives. Cliff.
