Description
I think that this Venus Pudica is an apt image both to close this first series on art and to describe the sign of Virgo or Virgin.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ALL VIRGOANS!!!!
Virgo is the only zodiacal sign represented by a female. Virgoans are usually observant, shrewd, critically inclined, judicious, patient, practical supporters of the status quo, and tend toward conservatism in all departments of life. On the surface they are emotionally cold, but the outward lack of feeling may, in some individuals born under this sign, conceal too much emotion. The Virgo likes to analyze things and are not comfortable until they figure out all angles of the problem they currently are focused on. This sign is the symbol of chastity, the sign of the virgin which shows decency and a simplicity of style. The Virgoan possesses a well balanced mind and have superior intellectual abilities. They are considered by friends and family to be courteous, diplomatic, cool and rather reserved.
This Capitoline Venus in Rome is a slightly over lifesize marble statue of Venus. It is an Antonine copy of a late Hellenistic sculpture that ultimately derives from Praxiteles. But it modifies the Praxitelean tradition by a carnal and voluptuous treatment of the subject.
Venus pudica is a term used to describe a classic figural pose in Western art. In this, an unclothed female (either standing or reclining) keeps one hand covering her private parts, surprised coming out of a bath pool. The resultant pose - which is not, incidentally, applicable to the male nude - is somewhat asymmetrical and often serves to draw one's eye to the very spot being hidden. The word 'pudica' comes to us by way of the Latin 'pudendus', which can mean either external genitalia or shameful, shy or both simultaneously.
Thank you for your kind comments.

This is gorgeous and a wonderful dedication to all Virgos...I love the crisp clarity of the photograph and the manner in which so much detail just emerges from this! I also love her suggestive pose...there's no way to miss what she's "hiding" and it seems to me that her modesty is rather like dance-floor modesty in a crowded disco...she directs your attention away from "the goods" while continuously reminding you that they're there! The information you provided underscores this, and I must say of the image, that it's quite nice to see a more voluptuous woman rather than an underfed one. This is super.
