Great detail on this, Boris, and I, too, found the face fascinating. I don't think I've ever seen the face of one of these critters with such clarity.

WOW! That's one of those European yellow jackets...they're hairy compared to their cousins who are native to North America...I wonder if this is one of those infamous German Yellowjackets (they're among the few yellow jacket species to actually "mark" their victims so that others will know to sting them!) I bring this up because the face is slightly different from the ones I'm familiar with in the Chicago area...the mandibles are longer and narrower, and the eyes are slightly different too. Well...in all honesty, no matter what species, it's a gorgeous specimen and quite hairy! Eastern Yellow Jackets aren't as hairy and those are the ones that tend to like life in Chicago, so for me, it's a bit amusing to see so hirsute a specimen. This is a great shot!
