Description
The next morning, after a good nights sleep, they get checked out of their room and find a nice local café for breakfast. Then they find as many spots of old 66 as they can along the way and head out west for the last leg of their journey.
They find a nice long stretch of old highway 66 heading north out of Seligman, Arizona up, over and around before it drops back down into Kingman Arizona. They stop for meal break in Kingman, then back on I-40 to cross on down into California where they and drive and drive and drive. They can tell it is California by all the increased traffic congestion. After many hours, they finally pull into LA and are heading down Santa Monica Boulevard. It isn’t long before they get to the pier in Santa Monica, the unofficially end to Route 66.
Somewhere along the way, they have lost Ridge, but they know he is ok, because he called them on his cell phone. He says he might be delayed an hour or so, but not to worry about him. He’ll catch up with them at the pier for supper.
Clint drives out to the pier and luckily finds a place to park. He and Joey get out and walk back to a park nearby to pay their respects to one of the great travelers of old Highway 66, Will Rogers. There is an old plaque that commemorates the highway once being named Will Rogers Highway. The plaque reads as follow:
WILL ROGERS HIGHWAY
DEDICATED 1952
T0
WILL ROGERS
HUMORIST * WORLD TRAVELER * GOOD NEIGHBOR
THIS MAIN STREET OF AMERICA
HIGHWAY 66
WAS THE FIRST ROAD HE TRAVELED IN
A CAREER THAT LED HIM STRAIGHT TO
THE HEARTS OF HIS COUNTRYMEN.
This has been one most remarkable trip and the guys are all very glad they made it. Of course, they have a place to stay now. Amanda has alerted her other three sons to be expecting them. Many new adventures lie in front of our weary travelers, but those are other stories.
Thank you for taking a peek! Your support is greatly appreciated!
