Description

Chip captured 3 of the nine dragons on Chinatown’s Nine Dragon wall, and looking back through my files, I realize that I captured eight and three quarters of them. That is one impossible wall to photograph. It’s not as large as you think, nor is it easy to stand somewhere photographically friendly. As I’ve said before, strategically-placed obstacles and really difficult lines of sight can make Chicago really photo-resistant. This picture was made on Cermak Avenue at the gateway to Chicago’s Chinatown on October 25, 2009. Thanks for viewing. And I hope you enjoy this shot.

Indeed it is beautiful, and I really do like the POV anyway.

I guess it's not that bad to miss 1/4 of a dragon, but now I'm wondering if it is really there, ha ha! I think you'll have to take the shot from ground level, between the bars of the ornamental railing...and we're all waiting...hint, hint...after all, would NIN have met with success if they were known as "eight and three quarter inch nails?

This is a great shot! Those colors just pop out and I'm surprised you even bothered to capture this...you're right about Chicago's occasional photo-resistance, it's more than occasional actually and this wall is proof...you can only get the whole thing if you're violating the laws of reality and standing exactly where the building across Cermak is standing, but only if there aren't buses going by and stopping just as your shutter clicks. This is really great and I love the light on those dragons. Hmmm...I think it's time for cashew chicken again, with seaweed salad! Now I'm hungry again.

Unbelievable scrolling, sculpture, patterns and textures in this cool photo! Love the POV, which was probably the only one appropriate enough to capture this much of the wall.

Chicago the Enigmatic: No, somehow that doesn't nail it either. Man, the colours of the dragons is impressive. But the Chinese revere vibrancy in there signs and monuments. They say it brings good luck. This is why Chinatown in Toronto (and I expect other places as well) is as vibrant and colourful as Christmas tree. The merchants take great care to keep their signs clean and well lit. Even in the salt caked slushy gloom of late January. Along with the dragons, the wall seems to represent water a great deal. The water symbol is associated with the flow of money. Which is good for business in general. Lovely shot. And I love the red contrasts in the background.

The image speaks so fully for itself that I couldn't figure out for a minute what you were on about with that missing quarter dragon. The pov is just right ... you've given us a wonderful look at this wall! I did finally see the 3/4 dragon, btw. :)
