It seems he stands in front of a steam traction engine. I've seen those machines recently in Dordrecht (Holland). Burrell is a famous name... Great character in front of the machine. Perhaps the owner? A very fine picture as a whole.

This is a fine portrait, Roy; wonderfully documentive. His strong personality harkens back to our collective imagination of the train engineers of a century past. His outfit, and just enough of the engine behind him, fill out the background details of the portrayal.  I would not want him looking straight into the camera.  It is a finer study capturing the moment in mid conversation with him attentively listening.  A straight-in, posed portrait would be an entirely different work. It might be interesting in black and white, like a period photograph, but I think I prefer your choice.  My eyes really warm to the subtle russet tone of the scene.  I'd also not want to lose the colors of his clothes or the engine.
