Description

There’s something distinctly pleasing about coffee and flies: simple pleasures—caffeine and insects. It takes so little to please me, and for that I’m infinitely glad. There’s a particular disadvantage to being “high maintenance.” Boredom is such a profound side effect of that. I like the fact that boredom is something I rarely encounter, that needs—as I recognize them—are simple. I thought of this as I sat with Corey, enjoying iced coffee. We’d ambled around Albany Park, photographing things and just hanging out. It was time for coffee. I won’t say what major pastry chain we visited for $1 coffee, but for those in the know—so to speak—the color scheme in this image may be a profound marker of the place. The overhead speakers throbbed with something Latin in flavor, and the staff functioned as any staff might, on a day when they’d probably prefer to be at home. I wasn’t in the mood for donuts or croissants or the like. I simply wanted a place to sit, and a window through which to see the activities outside, and a few moments to browse through the images on my camera. I was distracted—for just a moment—by the buzz of a fly: a non-paying customer. I like flies—but not in food joints, and so I was quite happy that I hadn’t ordered more than iced coffee. As for the fly, it came to rest on the edge of the table that Corey and I shared, and a quick finger shutter finger captured the image here. It’s a marker of a day, and also intriguing—for me—in the bold and simple colors present. Hopefully, it’s an image you enjoy as well. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope you’re all at the start of a great week.

This is VERY festive, and I love the fact that it looks like the fly has accommodated your artistic sensibilities and is indeed, walking along a line. I'll skip the pastry there, though. :P

Sorry I can't help but think, Help me, help me". Excellent image. Although I like most insects, I could do without flies and mosquitos. Come to think of it, I'm not very fond of ticks or fleas either...

Do they do tea? And croissants? Sans flies? Superb shot. I won't challenge you to a duel - you're obviously too quick for me...

Wonderful! I know all about the not so nice habits of flies, but I rarely think on that when I see one as beautiful as this. Fabulous capture, and he does rather look as though he's taking a sobriety test! ^=^

Maybe the little fly found something to eat in the groove. Almost abstract. It is a beautiful shot, Chip :-)

Chip - I am actually not "here" so to speak! I have a possible second bout of Influenza and this time it really wacked me! The doc has sent away a swab to the National Centre for Communicable Diseases again!!! (Looks like I'm becoming medical history!) I have been in bed since Sunday! I am just doing some gallery patrol when I saw this image and I just had to pop in! It is super cool! I just love the divine moment in which you caught this unwelcome guest!! The colors are amazing (and yeah, even as a South African I recognize it) and the diagonal line perfect! Wonderful image my friend!

This is a superb capture, and knowing the nature of flies, you must have lightning reflexes! As for the chain, I don't see colour the same way you do, and have no idea!

The fly probably came for the caffeine. I hear the effect on them is like LSD on a human. Or tuna with respect to cats. I'm not big on flies myself. Though this variety, the metallic coloured thorax and abdomen, I've always been fond of. They (and their green and amber cousins) used to perform spectacular aerial displays on hot summer afternoons when I was a boy.
