Description

FORWARD, HO!!! Or is it, FORWARD, YO!!!? I've never been able to determine which. Captured 7/31/10, at an American Civil War Reenactment held at the vast and beautiful El Dorado Park in beautiful Long Beach, California. Much better viewed full size. Wow, what a ragtag bunch compared to the Union cavalry. Some would say a motley crew. Other than the officers, very few of the Rebel horsemen were wearing the customary gray uniforms and kepis, which was a real disappointment to me. Or maybe I've been watching too many movies which show them all dressed military proper. Maybe this is the way it actually was. Cool horses, though. And, I've noticed throughout this cavalry series that many of the ladies commenting are interested only in the horses. I don't know where that puts the soldiers. Adios, amigos, thankx for looking in, and for any and all complimentary comments and favs.

Yeh, ragtag was my first impression too.I've read a fair bit on the Civil War and particularly at the outbreak uniforms were anything but uniform. Each State raised it's own units from different areas with their own dress code.I think the best example is the two guys behind the horse in the bottom picture.Just look at those bright red trousers.I believe these may represent Zouaves (spelling?).Really great series of pictures, certainly looks like a fun day out.

Excellent captures of this event. I've been under the impression that the confederates were a motley crew indeed, but I could be very wrong. Nice work!

very good shots. I not sure if the dress was like all gray too. guess i have to look it up on some civil war photos taken by the photographers of the time. no the color will not be there but you be able to tell of the clothes if they was all the same or not.

Intersting, that they are no dressed up like the Union guys, maybe because of them coming directly from all sorts of homes to defend their lifestyle..

Neat thing about re-enacting the Confederacy. Get one piece of grey (or butternut) clothing and you're there. Nice shots!
