Description
Rose came in and sat down, flanked by River Prince. He looked them over and leaned up against a wall with his hands behind his head. Rose noticed. Everyone tried to talk at once, until Rose raised a hand. She announced,"This is an informal Captain's mast to conducted by me since Captain Tkarro is busy dealing with diplomatic circumstances concerning this matter, and also since all the people concerned are NOT members of the USCOMM armed forces. I've already heard from River Prince. Does anyone have anything to say before I start asking questions?"
Thena exclaimed,"It's not my fault, but I went along... I never saw Sunshine so angry, and I didn't want her to go alone!"
Snowflake practically sprawled across her chair and said,"She was spun up and determined to go out of the ship. Kael suggested we take her to the souvenir stand closest to the ship to head off her sneaking off the ship. I ascertained it to be safe as per your guidelines earlier to us concerning children and this place. That part was my responsibility."
Kael said,"Yeah, I suggested being the adults along for this. If things got out of hand, Snowy would teleport them back to the ship. No one imagined that anything would blow up, much less affect anyone!"
Sunshine sat and glowered. Rose asked,"Do you have anything to say for yourself?"
Sunshine exclaimed,"I want to smack you,Mom!"
Rose looked stunned, as other people looked like they saw a ghost. Prince snapped,"SUNNY! Maybe you need to shut up!"
Sunny jumped up, and wheeled on him,"YOU SHUT UP! I'll smack you next!" She turned on her mother and said,"I'm gonna say something I don't want to say this any more than you want to hear it! At first I wanted SOMETHING. An external memory device to show I was HERE! We crossed 70,000 light years of INTERGALACTIC SPACE, and can't even GET OFF THE SHIP? That made me mad, but I could understand that there are some things adults do that let kids like us out..."
She darkened and her radar plates fold back like ears and she snapped,"When I heard you stepped out on Dad with that creepy guy in the green outfit--and he BOUGHT YOU A DRESS and INVITED YOU TO A PARTY while we were locked up on this SHIP? I wanted to strike you! I was so angry, I could NOT think straight! I have NEVER been so mad! I had to go get something...ANYTHING to calm myself down. A little trinket, a bauble--ANYTHING! AND THAT BLEW UP IN MY FACE!"
Rose said in a careful tone,"Sunny, stop pinging the ceiling with your radar. You'll give everyone here microwave burns to their scalp,even people who were trying to help you. The accident was NOT your fault. You need to calm down. This is not like you. Do you know why you are so angry out of proportion?"
Kael said,"I can guess. She has reason, but a Cyclops child wouldn't have so much fire in their eye normally?"
Rose shook her head, keeping her eye on Sunny.
Kael said,"Leviathan and Neblae have similar agreements with their men in their lives--BUT--they are adults!"
Rose looked surprised, and then saddened."THAT never occurred to me.Alright then--here's the punishment details. Genjiro, you aren't included, since you weren't involved in this."
He sighed,"At least no guilt by association, this time! Ma'am."
"Thena, assignment to the mess for three days, Prince, Garbage detail for lack of reporting this, for three days. Snowy and Kael--three days of your choice of duties."
Snowy said,"Mess for me!"
Kael said,"Vasser said if he caught me in the mess again, he'd skin me. Garbage is my friend..."
Sunny asked,"I guess I really get it. I shouldn't have spoke so mean."
Rose shook her head. "NEVER be afraid to speak to me about anything.Sunny. You get a MONTH of hand-to-hand combat training and anger management conducted by Master-Sergeant Genjiro,here. You're making history. First Machine-Life in history that needs anger-management!"
Thena exclaimed,"Ouch! Beaten black and blue! That IS harsh!"

She missed one thing. Talking about her willful disobedience. Even though this whole gathering was about their leaving the ship, Rose should deal with that issue. And while there may be extenuating circumstances, it is never something that should be glossed over. Maybe she needs to talk to her in private but she need to talk to her. Because it is about her authority as a parent--not as commander Rose--to make decisions as her parent, AND while an explaination is a wonderful thing for a child to recieve, not ALL decisions by a PARENT have to be explained to the child. And that needs to be addressed. This is a beautiful scene... WELL executed and layed out!

Excellent, informative, very interesting. Sunshine with a temper, that is also very interesting. With the power(s) she has that could be very dangerous.

I'm trying to sort out the conversation between Kael and Rose. Is it unusual for a cyclops to become angry at a perceived threat to the family solidarity? Is it unusual for her to be angry or to perceive the threat? This may have been covered when the cyclops were first introduced, but are they as a rule monogamous? I can't see Obett as a threat to Thistledown. Rose treats Obett more as a adopted son than anything else. Not that Sunny would necessarily see that distinction. While the accident was not Sunny's fault, her being there certainly was. She not only disobeyed, but put herself and Thena at risk. Whether Rose's actions were ill-judged from a appearance standpoint or not, it doesn't excuse Sunny's actions. But as Sunny is about to have a very effective punishment and will have anger management lessons, measures to deal with the root of the infraction are being taken. Excellent image! I only have one minor critique. Some of the chair legs seem to be melting into the floor. Great expressions! I particularly like Prince's. I like Thena's pose. It looks like someone facing the music. Her feet look fidgety. Nice reflections!
