Description
Mātīr Tōtas: Gaulish for "mother of the people" (mātīr "mother" (cf. Latin mater) + tōtas genitive of tōtā "people" (cognate of Germanic *teutaz, ancestor of modern German "Deutsch" and English "Dutch"). Perhaps the seated woman is one of the Matres or Matrones, the tri-part mother goddesses spoken of by Iulius Cæsar's Bella Gallico. Perhaps she is a druidess. Perhaps she is the wife of the rix, the king. Perhaps the man beside her is Vercingetorix himself (Vercingetorix is a Latinization of Gaulish Uircingetorix: uiros "man" + cingetoros "warrior, champion" + rix "king").
