Hiboux: One of my four rescued friends
"If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other.
If you do not talk to them you will not know them, and what you do not know you will fear.  What one fears one destroys."
--Chief Dan George (1899 - 1981)
The avatar I use is a photo of a kitten who adopted me last fall. She came to my door one night, hungry and cold and in need of shelter. I had already adopted a rescued dog and 2 fostered cats (I have a friend who works in animal rescue), but another friend told me that being chosen by a cat was a special thing, so, here she is in her new home. I called her Hiboux (French for owl for those who don't already know), since she reminded me of a snowy owl tapping on my door.
Sorry I need a new digital camera. The one used for this photo was one of the first ones ever made that utilizes a floppy disc. I am attached to it, but thought it was more important to show off my kitty here since this is merely my "home" page and not a display of my digital art. I'll update it as soon as I can.
I live in the US Midwest, have a degree in landscape design, compete nationally (only in the US so far) in dancesport, and choreographed contemporary dance for over a decade. I've been writing since childhood--mainly for my own amusement. A few of my poems have been published in obscure places and I used to write many interviews which were published online for years. None of my novels have met the public eye yet and that's OK because for me "the joy is in the journey." ÂÂ
I'm hooked on creating digital art. I stumbled upon it when I worked online for 11 years as a content editor and became intrigued watching the medium grow. 3D art feels like a good niche for me combining movement, landscape, my love of nature, history, art, technology, myth and storytelling . . .  I love to experiment with software and hope to continue to grow as an artist. I'm in awe of many of the beautiful works shared on this site. I've also begun a blog here called "A Novelist's Adventures in Digital Art" where I list useful sites and tools I find along the way:

I consider myself a beginner at digital art. We all have to start somewhere. I try to encourage other creatives on all skill levels as often as I have time. I learn a lot from the artists I favorite here and even from private emails with tips if you feel so inclined. I dont allow ratings in my gallery anymore, because I don't believe in "grading" art--it doesn't fit into my personal philosophy. That said, I do often admire many of the talented professional artists and am happy when they are showcased on the art charts here and feel the rating system--though it has flaws--is important to honor excellence.  I do appreciate any comments and appreciate constructive criticism and suggestions.

Cathy, you really did a splendid job on this lovely image. It's such a delight to see you after such a long time and I enjoyed reading what you have been up to. So sorry to hear about your cat being sick and the news of having to put down your beloved Honey dog broke my heart. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Oh Cathy, I'm so sorry to read that Honey is gone! I know how your heart must be aching. She had a wonderful life with you, she was so well loved, and she gave you just as much love back. Pancreatitis can be lived with once you find a diet for Hiboux that she will eat and that her body can work with, it won't be so hard. Murphy also has to deal with pancreatitis, and we've finally gotten his lipids lower with diet and meds. I hope your winter will be much calmer then your summer has been. I love this scene .. I'm thinking Voodoo priestess too, waiting and watching to see if her spells are effective or not. You've created this scene is such a beautiful manner!

What a pleasure to see new artwork from your fertile imagination... I've really missed your wonderful design skills, which are clearly still in the top echelon despite your long layoff. Mysterious, evocative, and very beautiful work, Cathy. I was thinking about you just this week, wondering what had become of you. I'm so sorry to hear about Honey - I know how you feel, as we recently had to put down one of our cats, and his sister is showing increasing signs of dementia... Hang in there, sort out your tendonitis and get back onto the dance floor :o) I'm not sure I'll see you in Second Life, fascinating as it sounds - I don't have time to do everything I want to do in First Life right now!

Wonderful comments, and I too am deeply sorry about the loss of dear Honey, and the struggles for Hiboux. And your tendinitis. But it's great to see you back, if even for one visit. I know this is for your Second Life work, but you have to know that it's still replete with your reaching-back-into-memory qualities, your sense of the mystery of things everywhere, your literary sense (the woman here feels like she's out of any number of famous novels), and---as Craig says---your design skills & sensibilities. The boughs on top caress the woman & show your design sense immediately (the way they're configured around her head, they way cross through her left arm---counterpoint---etc). The clouds seem painted on with actual paint. The grasses are almost "thought" on, adding to the sense of dream here, and of memory. And you have touches of gold and violet (the hue) which make one feel there is a deep life hidden in here, which may be in the woman or something she may be seeking. And the woman seems multi-racial, true to that region of the US, but also symbolic of a global age. And she is quietly seeking beyond the picture itself. Subtle and inward, and gentle too. And like all your work, both multi-layered and with your usual absolute design sense. I'd love to see what you do as you expand images like this. And how they fit into the complex world of Second Life, which I'm still starting to understand. I think if people had to characterize the bayou, this image would capture many of the characteristics that would come into their minds...delicate & inward as always.

Welcome back! Great to see new work from you. Quite a beautiful piece it is too. Love everything about it. Wonder what she's searching for... Sorry to hear about Honey. Here's hoping that you have a much better fall/winter than your summer, although the trip to e-brinks gallery sounds inspiring. All the best...

Splendid artwork my friend ! Life can be tough sometimes. I know how you feel. My dog died a month ago and I'm still crying when I cross dogs in the streets. Only time can take the pain away, only leaving good memories. Big Hugs !!

What a joy to see you back! I am so sorry to hear about Honey and Hiboux. I hope Hiboux can recover soon. This scene is extraordinary. I love the pose, the POV and the lighting is just exceptional.

Our cats and dogs are our family - no matter what others are say, period. And if one of them isn't well, we suffer with them. It's for sure that I understand you to the fullest, hon. And if I could send you all the luck in the world, I would. But I can only send you my virtual luck - and I send you all of it!!!!!!!! And I send you stength for everything that lies ahead of you and your beloved ones. Lots of hugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~Sassy~
