Description

This is a strange bird, it thinks it's an eagle. You could forgive it for this mistake when you know why. It was hatched and reared by foster parents. A pair of Steppe Eagles are mum and dad. The eagles are young and laid infertile eggs these where substituted for buzzard eggs to help the new parents develope their parental instinct. So hopefully they will breed and produce their own young next year. One of the tricks to help rare birds in a breeding programme. They did a good job with this youngster just 3 months old now.

That is a great story Kevin. I could happily string up those people who go to great lengths to steal eggs from all our very few rare birds. He is a handsome one, and I hope he holds promise for the future. It looks like his foster parents did a good job. Fingers crossed for the next breeding year. Oh - and yes, it is a smashing photograph:-) Thankyou.

5 years ago, over in the meadow with my dog, I sat watching a couple of buzzards circling above me. They were calling constantly, and soon I realised why. From the copse came 5 young fledgeling buzzards, obviously on their first flight! It took over an hour to get them all in the air, and soon they were doing all sorts of acrobatics, high above their parents, who circled beneath their offspring, keeping a wary eye out. It was one of the highlights of my life, as this hawk is one of my favourite hunting birds. This is a fabulous image. Stunning and pefect! ^=^
