Description

Brother André, born Alfred Bessette, faith healer, religious counsellor at St-Grégoire-d'Iberville, Canada East 9 Aug 1845; at Montréal 6 Jan 1937. Although he was functionally illiterate, unimposing in speech and stature and never advanced beyond the most lowly positions within his religious order, the Congregation of the Holy Cross (CSC), Brother André became the most popular religious figure in Québec in the 20th century. Tens of thousands attributed their miraculous healings to André's intervention with his patron, St Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary. His work scandalized many priests, physicians and sophisticated Catholics; but in 1904 his admirers, many from blue-collar families, helped him to build a small oratory in honour of Joseph on the slopes of Mount Royal. Some years later the church arch became involved. A basilica, still Montréal's most imposing landmark, was constructed 1924-55. The church organized pilgrimages and the oratory became the liturgical centre for the Catholic trade union movement of Québec. Half a million visitors still come to the oratory every year - the only major urban shrine in Canada. Despite his reputation as a faith healer, Brother André's primary concern was to promote the worship of the suffering Christ through the patronage of St Joseph. Afflicted by poor health throughout his life, André encouraged his closest followers to accept their suffering rather than to seek healing, since suffering brings one closer to Jesus on the cross. He was declared "venerable" in 1978 and formally beatified on 23 May 1982. In February 2010, Pope Benedict XVI approved Brother André for sainthood, making him the first Catholic Saint born in Quebec. About the Oratory Organ... Precious pipes At seven storeys tall and 5,811 pipes, the organ at St. Joseph's Oratory is an impressive instrument. For Philippe Bélanger, playing it is a privilege he's been waiting for since he was nine years old. At age 28 he's become the oratory's official organist, coaxing beautiful sounds from a machine he says is like an orchestra. Bélanger says he's there to stay. "I see myself dying at this organ," he tells CBC Montreal. The Miracle on Mount Royal Thanks Magik

Frère André, né Alfred Bessette, guérisseur spirituel, conseiller religieux Saint-Grégoire-d'Iberville, Canada-Est, 9 août 1845 -- Montréal, 6 janv. 1937.

C A N O N I Z A T I O NO C T O B E R 1 7 T H Montreal, February 19, 2010 (St. Joseph’s Oratory) — With a palpable sense of elation, a number of priests and brothers of the Congregation of Holy Cross (the religious family of Brother Andre), members of the archdiocese of Montreal, and Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal assembled today in the Consistory Hall of Vatican City to hear Pope Benedict XVI proclaim in their presence and in the presence of the College of Cardinals that Brother André will be canonized the October 17 in Rome. This long-anticipated news provoked warm applause on behalf of the first Canadian man to be formally recognized as a model of sanctity. The Superior General of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Father Hugh Cleary, CSC and the Rector of Saint Joseph’s Oratory, Father Claude Grou, CSC were part of a delegation which included the Canadian ambassador to the Holy See, Anne Leahy: “Brother Andre’s canonization is a great honor for Canada. Brother Andre is a well-known figure not only in the Catholic Church. He has touched people all around him in Montreal, in Canada and beyond. The Church wishes to recognize his merits that are a particularly shining expression of the contribution of Catholics to our country and its spiritual tradition.” Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, Archbishop of Montreal, declared at a press conference at Saint Joseph’s Oratory, “The announcement of the canonization of Brother André is the best thing that could have happened this year for the Church of Montreal. I have always been impressed by this man, both a humble man and a visionary, a man of deep faith. An example of determination, still relevant today in 2010.” The Canadian Provincial Superior of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Father Jean-Pierre Aumont, CSC said that, “The announcement of the canonization is a wonderful gift which will be received with delight by his numerous friends who have benefited from his intercession and who have been his supporters for many decades. For the religious of Holy Cross, it represents more than ever a source of inspiration, a model of faith and trust in God and in the human condition. He shows us how to envision great things and how to look toward the future!”
