Description

Located at the top of Loch Sheil in the West Higlands of Scotland, Glenfinnan Viaduct is on the West Highland Line and connects Fort William and Mallaig on the coast. The 21-arch single track viaduct was one of the largest engineering undertakings using concrete without reinforcing when it was built by Sir Robert McApine. The viaduct is 416 yards long and made up of 21 arches, the tallest of which is 100ft high. According to myth, during construction a cart-horse and driver were killed when they fell into one of the piers while dumping their load, and were buried in the concrete. Research has shown that the incident actually happened at Loch Nan Uamh Viaduct, further down the line, near Arisaig, and the driver survived. Glenfinnan Viaduct has been used as a location in several films and television series, including Charlotte Gray,Monarch of the Glen, Stone of Destiny, several Harry Potter films with the Hogwarts Express crossing the viaduct. You may have seen it on a nice day with the train coming over...this is from below when the weather is not so good.

you're right, i've always seen it looking bright and idyllic. i like this view better. not only does it have more drama, i like seeing the discoloration and texture to it. with the manipulation you've done, it looks real and unreal at once.

This is so beautiful. It reminds me of the mat painting that artists do for movie sets. Fabulous capture!
