Description

During our trip to Grand Portage we stopped in Grand Marais, MN to visit Artists Point. The rocks on the shore are magnificent and miles of them to climb on. This small pond of water intrigued me, especially since I could see my kids (the dog thinks he is a kid, too) in the reflection. So, here are Mickey, Megan and Matthew - my 3M's. Mickey looks the happiest as he hasn't had to put up with me constantly taking photos! Thanks for the visit. Jodie

The kids contrast well against the dark, inhospitable and rough textured environment, J.

(Sorry for the repeat-ebots, I'm sloppy commenting right now...) I'm just returning to comments, and will be back on RR in intervals. (Recovering also means catching up with one's life, which takes longer than I thought.) I'm trying for representative comments, which isn't easy with your work since everything you post is representative of your deep eye...I loved this from the start for its natural capture of "the 3Ms," so natural to family portraits; where one---megan---is smiling for the camera while also in a complex pose (like, when you stop shooting, she'll return to other things she may have been doing); one---mickey---is happy (yes), but also turned as if he sees a dog off camera; and one---matthew---poses like a son who has to pose but, as you say, is a little tired of being photographed, lol. (Lots of similar shots of me at that age.) The slight reddish glow on all 3 is subtle but glowing, as if they were picking up the pink-red glow of the rocks around them. The reflection is beautiful too, and very pure. But then you have the chasm---I assume this is ore?---which completely changes the photograph: Because the beautiful & very real capture of your family is met with a chasm in the earth, which reminds one that there is something going on in the geology of this area, and it is big & powerful and very, very old. Some photographers would say it's for another picture; but I say that it's part of the whole---a family shot with some powerful nature right at its feet. Therefore it's a complex shot, which takes one through more than one world as one moves through it; and its pinkish glow intensifies as one goes down, a gentle "harmonizer" for the whole. A fine, complex & gentle portrait, about more than one thing, but still one portrait all the same.
