Description

HM Prison Pentridge was a Maximum Security Australian prison built in 1850, with the first prisoners arriving in 1851 and located in Coburg, Victoria. The prison officially closed on 1 May 1997. As part of my previous job, I used to visit prisoners here. It was a hard place back then, full of hardened men. As a visitor, I was always glad to leave! As it turns out, it is much easier to get in and out (allegedly!!) now that it has closed down! The place itself is steeped in history. 11 people were executed here, including the brownout strangler Eddie Leonski. Everyone from Ned Kelly to Chopper Reid have called this place home. Ned is still buried here. Whilst the guard towers are now empty of human inhabitants, pigeons seem to have taken over. Check out a shot I took of the pigeon poo HERE! Lots more pics to come!

This is a great shot of an austere place which looks just as hard to get in as to get out!

It is interesting to see the old construction mixed with the new, ie the metal cell? tower on the watch tower. it does, however have aspects of looking like a castle

We have a very similar structure for the State penetentiary back in Leavenworth, Kansas. But it is still going strong. Neat shot.

Hey Mike! It's actually not a modern cell phone tower, but the original 'calling all cars, calling all cars....someone's climbed over the wall again' radio aerial! LOOKEE HERE!

Fantastic capture of this historic building. It looks like a great place to be rehabbed and turned into a museum. Dana
