Description
Joshua pressed the call button outside Captain Jones' stateroom, Catherine Kirk, his aunt, beside him. After several seconds, the door slid open. Ellen Jones stood in the doorway, a look of dread on her face. She motioned for the two of them to enter.
"Captain Mitchel said that you had news of my family. And since he wouldn't tell me anything, I figure it's bad."
"Yes Captain Jones. It is." Joshua steeled himself for what was to come. "Your husband died, two years after you disappeared, fighting Romulans." The woman slowly shook her head.
"What of my children?"
"Your son died defending Human colonists from Breen slavers. Your daughter and her husband were killed on the Setlik III colony by the Cardassians. She had two children, a boy and a girl. A friend helped them escape from the Cardassians"
"The girl, Freya entered Starfleet. She died when she stayed aboard a badly damaged destroyer with her captain and two others, and rammed and destroyed a Dominion battleship, in order to allow three other destroyers to escape." Joshua's eyes were now tearing up. "Her captain was my aunt, Cynthia Wu. The four were posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor."
"Her son Oskar, served under me in Starfleet Special Forces. He perished on a planet called Teros 6 with nine other commandos. He was awarded his second Medal Of Honor for his actions there."
"You knew my grandson?" Jones' face brightened.
"Very well. He has a wife and daughter. But she was teaching at the SSF training facility on Niril when it was attacked by the Dominion. Things are still a bit chaotic there, so they could still be alive."
"Someone was insane enough to attack the Nirillese?" Catherine asked in disbelief.
"Yes. They could have asked the Romulans about that, but I don't think they would tell them anything. Especially after they bombarded Romulus."
"Who are the Dominion?" Jones asked. "I've never heard of them."
"They are from the Gamma quadrant. They entered our part of the galaxy through a wormhole. They're like the mirror image of the Federation. Their rulers, the Founders, rule through fear. Fear of the use of the Jem'Hadar, genetically engineered soldiers."
"I guess Humans weren't the only ones to use those things." The captain said with a laugh. "But I imagine they can control their monsters."
"You need to watch that attitude with regards to the cyborgs Captain Jones. Especially when you consider you are in a room with two of them." Ellen Jones immediately backed away from the others. Catherine Kirk on the other hand, glared angrily at Joshua.
"We did not die in the Eugenics War. We've thrived and lived among you for centuries. We've served with you. Fought for you. And we've died for you. About a third of your crew are cyborgs. Just ask your doctors."
"Does this mean we no longer hide what we are?" The tall woman asked, still staring at Joshua.
"Six months after you disappeared, our existence was announced to the people of the Federation. Some were fearful at first. But they realized that we've been among them for centuries, living peacfully."
"So you need to watch that attitude Captain Jones. Because your daughter married one. Which made your grandchildren cyborgs of the General class."
"General Class?" Jones queried. "Just how many classes are there?"
"There were three." Catherine said. "The Soldier, Assassin, and General classes. Khan Noonian Singhe and his followers were the Assassin Class. They were arrogant, violent, and uncontrollable. And the last of them died when James Kirk and his crew of the Enterprise killed them."
"Captain Jones." A voice called over the intercom. "Can you come to the bridge. We have a slight problem up here. Dr Van Matthews has left a message for you. But we're having trouble opening it."
"We'll be right there."
