Description

I knew all of those engineering classes would be good for something someday. I finally have built a bridge! This image is intended to depict the Tacoma Narrows Bridge just before it met its demise. Only three months after the Tacoma Narrows bridge opened in 1940, tie-down cables intended to stiffen the bridge snapped during a windstorm. The cables had been anchored into the ground and attached to the parts of the bridge deck that were moving the most. The cables were replaced. The bridge became notorious for large movements during high winds. On 7 November 1940, with a wind velocity of about 60 kph, the bridge began twisting and oscillating violently. The bridge was twisting about 45 degrees in two waves, and oscillating up and down one meter in nine waves. The oscillations reached 8 meters as the bridge tore itself apart Created in Ultra Fractal Thanks to all of the kind people at Renderosity who have commented on my work. Wow!!! This is such a creative and well done fractal. Usually it takes a leap of imagination to see real life objects in the fractal world, but this one is such a clear depiction of the titled concept there is no imagination requied. Also your history of the bridge and its demise is a wonderful addition to the enjoyment of such a wonderful fractal.

Watching the old footage of that incident is amazing, the Power of Nature against the best designed plans of Man...we don't stand the chance of a Fart in a Whirlwind against Gaia, she will get her way in the end. Awesome Fractaling Peace

A wonderful bridge you have created here it is so real looking. I'm glad I wasn't on the real bridge when it started moving it sounds as though it was very scary.
