Description

Well, ah do declayah! Shades of Gone With The Wind. At the risk of repeating myself, I just had to again include the above remarks because they seem so appropriate. Captured 7/31/10, at the American Civil War Reenactment held at the vast and beautiful El Dorado Park in beautiful Long Beach, California. Much better viewed full size. Not too much more I can add here, except that the chap in the bottom photo was apparently bored and unimpressed by this exercise. I know it's impractical nowadays, but wouldn't it be cool if women still dressed this way? Au revoir, thankx for clicking on, and for any and all favorable comments and favs.

Noo no it would not be cool if we had to get into all that get-up every day (just my opinion)! I LOVE these dresses, but ONLY on someone else thank you! LOL I have read how many layers and, and, and...that go with these...especially the more puffed out ones. To top it off I'm just not a dress up, let alone dress wearing gal. I love my jeans!:-) These are great shots Harry, and yeppers that chap is bored cuz he had to wait three and a half hours for her to get that dress on, not to mention waiting for her to pick one out snickers ;-)

TERRIFIC shots! (I've always wondered WHY they call it a "CIVIL" / WAR? .... Seems like anything with 'WAR' in the title is NOT 'civil'?)

Your Civil War series is outstanding Harry and so enjoyable. This is a great collage on 1860's fashion. Dana

Wonderful collection of shots of the ladies' side of it; there are many historical periods with dress styles I'd be happy to sample, but unfortunately this one isn't one of them! Too many hot layers, too high in the collar and long in the sleeve, unthinkable without very functional air conditioning! And yes, not too easy for some of the more strenuous jobs that needed doing in those days, but I imagine that dressing for heavy chores (like laundry, rug-beating, harvesting, etc.) was a bit different than this "fancy dress" style. Even so, I'll take our modern stuff (well, some of it. A lot of it is just stupid.) Great pictures, Harry!

Oh, what fun! They all have marvelous period clothing and what a gorgeous day to parade around. We (my family and myself) participated in a reenactment, 2 yrs. in a row, as musicians. I have a costume like the gal, top left, but w/o parasol. I also have several civil war tunes that meander through my brain when I see these pics!

Nice shot of these women, but the thought of all those clothes is not a pleasant one. Better them than me!!

Looks like they all posed nicely for you Harry. Excellent collage...appears to be a super bright time of day. On top of everything else, somebody had to iron all these things every day:)

Very cool collage Harry. I once attended (several years ago) a Civil War re-enactment. I found it very interesting how these people get into it.

I just love these dresses and hooped petty coats! Gosh - it must have been so difficult to do anything wearing all the layers! I also adore those lace umbrellas - just lovely! So much to see in this fine collage Harry!

Lovely captures of these beautiful southern belles. What a lot of time has gone into making these outfits but the result looks so good, not that I would want to wear them everyday but now and again at a ball would be nice. I like those umbrellas and hats too.

My niece was in the costume of a lady 20 years later than this. It took her 15 minutes to get out of the high topped laced boots and the corset. I think I'll pass. It might be fun for a few hours as long as no corset was involved and it was cool out. They look pretty though. Excellent shots! You got some great expressions. The lady with the bored gentleman looks very flirtatious. Perhaps he should wake up.

love the comments. Yeah, I'd imagine these gowns would be a major operation to both get into and move around in. They really look more like costumes, to our eyes. But as someone pointed out, the women who were likely to afford these gowns probably had others to do any manual labor, so they probably used these gowns for lounging... Anyway, more of your fine photo-journalistic seeing...a fine collection of different attitudes inside the dresses. The top panel looks like two people openly posing, and they're happy to do so. If the background weren't what it was, it could easily be from the actual 1800s. The next two have 2 ladies looking a bit 'away', the way people do who aren't used to performing & being photographed. A nice candid capture, and the left-hand woman looks a bit like she's worried, or has heavy thoughts on her mind. Fitting for a civil war collection. (Like she's cogitating on troubled matters.) The light is nice too--dappled, varied, across their gowns. The third has a lady who is really posing for you: Looking like a performer who knows how to look into the camera. A very smart capture...she knows how to get our attention. The fourth is priceless because the right-hand lady looks like someone's aunt who was dragged to this affair---against her will---was told "ok, smile Auntie, it will just take a second," and she---her hands to her side like she's wholly uncomfortable with this whole thing---gives a faint smile. Very human capture! And the last: Yes, that man looks disinterested, but he also could be a ham, since he has a semi-uppity look on his face, as if he's too upper crust to be bothered with this whole event. Another terrific spontaneous moment. A real collection of human moments, lovely & funny, and the last panel has some beautiful pastel colors to boot...
