Description

First Contact. By far the most bizarre instance of first contact that the Imperium has ever experienced was when the Imperial battle cruiser Samson first encountered the bio-mechanical beings from the planet Mechanos. These huge mechanical constructs have roamed the galaxy for thousands of years within their own vast sphere of influence seeking knowledge and understanding of the universe they are a part of but never seeking first contact with any. Samson first came across one of the Mechanos beings as it floated badly injured and severely damaged in space after an encounter with a roaming fleet of pirate raiders many years before. Following first contact procedure the Samson slowly approached with its weapons powered-up but gun ports firmly closed, and after making contact with the creature Samson’s medical and technical personnel were able to give aid to the being before safely escorting it back to its home planet. Mechanos has since joined in a mutual aid and defence treaty with the Imperium allowing both scientific and technical knowledge to be freely shared to the mutual benefit of both parties, and on numerous occasions Imperial warships and beings from the planet Mechanos will be seen together on patrol within their respective boundaries. Author/Artists Notes Yesterday I acquired Nightmare Hero’s latest free-bee and immediately got the idea for this picture. This first picture, which is actually part of a series of two, shows the view that the crew of the Samson would probably have gotten as they slowly approached the Mechanos being as it floated injured and damaged in space. For the crew of the Samson it must have been both an awe-inspiring and terrifying sight, as they slowly approached a being which was clearly as large as the huge warship they were in. Tomorrow I reverse the prospective and give you the view that the Mechanos being would have seen as it floated helplessly in space not knowing what to expect as the Samson approached.
