Sorry, but it's another killing machine.... The Messerschmitt Me 262 "Schwalbe" (German for Swallow) was the world's first operational turbojet fighter aircraft. It was produced in World War II and saw action starting in 1944 as a multi-role fighter/bomber/reconnaissance/interceptor warplane for the "Luftwaffe". German pilots nicknamed it the "Sturmvogel" (Stormbird), while the Allies called it the Turbo. The Me 262 had a negligible impact on the course of the war due to its late introduction, with 509 claimed Allied kills against the loss of more than 100 Me 262s. The third prototype airframe became a true "jet" when it flew on 18 July 1942 in Leipheim near Günzburg, Germany, piloted by Fritz Wendel. This was almost nine months ahead of the British Gloster Meteor's first flight on 5 March 1943. Serial production did not begin until 1944. This delay in engine availability was in part due to the shortage of strategic materials, especially metals and alloys able to handle the extreme temperatures produced by the jet engine. Even when the engines were completed, they had an expected operational lifetime of approximately 50 hours; in fact, most 004s lasted just 12 hours. Operationally, the Me 262 had an endurance of 60 to 90 minutes. An experimental tactic was installing nitrous oxide injection. When chasing an Me 262, the pilot could press a button injecting nitrous oxide into the engine, producing a quick burst of speed. Slightly over 1,400 Me 262s of all versions were produced. As few as 200 Me 262s made it to combat units due to fuel shortages, pilot shortages, and the lack of airfields that could support the Me 262. Despite its deficiencies, the Me 262 clearly signaled the beginning of the end of piston-engined aircraft as effective fighting machines. Once airborne, it could accelerate to speeds well over 800 km/h (500 mph), over 150 km/h (93 mph) faster than any Allied fighter operational in the European Theater of Operations.

Another superb work. I understand your desire to avoid warbirds. I have the same issue myself and I have never modelled so far anything military, altought most warbirds are amazingly beautiful (such as this one). One suggestion, with the main job already done, why not go for some 262 postwar "peaceful" (more or less clones) made mostly in the Soviet sattelite nations ? All the best

Awesome work as usual. Almost everyday, at lunch, only 30 mins., I travel 1 mile to a small local airport and sit there and watch the ultra lites, piper cubs, cessnas and helicopters take off and land amongst the mountains. From work, somedays, I watch the forest service rappelling from the helicopters, practicing as smoke jumpers. I love to watch, but have no desire to fly.

Great 262. One problem that plagued most Messerschmitt designs was weak landing gear. A lot of 109's suffered gear collapse on take off or landing. The 262's nose gear was no exception. It required special handling during towing or it could be damaged.

C'est étonnant comme, en regardant aujourd'hui encore cet avion vieux de près de 60 ans, on a l'impression d'un engin de SF! Magnifique boulot de modélisation et texturage, le texte d'acompagnement (certes mille foisplus facile à réaliser) n'étant pas du moindre intérêt! Exceptionnel!
