Description
Near the center of Peace Park is a concrete, saddle-shaped monument that covers a cenotaph holding the names of all of the people killed by the bomb. The cenotaph carries the epitaph, "Rest in Peace, for the error shall not be repeated." Through the monument you can see the Peace Flame and the A-Bomb Dome. The Memorial Cenotaph was one of the first memorial monuments built on open field on August 6, 1952. The arch shape represents a shelter for the souls of the victim.
The Peace Bell stands near Children's Peace Monument and consists of a large Japanese bell hanging inside a small open-sided structure. Visitors are encouraged to ring the bell for world peace and the loud and melodious tolling of this bell rings out regularly throughout the Peace Park.
There is also a museum in the park. Exhibits include bloody bandages, piles of coins fused together by the heat of the blast and pictures of the dieing. For me the most moving sight was of the stone steps of the Sumitomo Bank. A man was sitting on the steps at the time of the blast. He was vaporized but the shadow of the man is preserved to this day on those steps.
When you leave the museum you are invited to sign the guest book. What could I say? Live in peace, love one another. I felt like a German visiting Dachau.
