Description

Bitterns are a classification of birds in the heron family, Ardeidae, a family of wading birds. About 13 inches (33cm) long with a wing span of 17 inches (43cm). Species named bitterns tend to be the shorter-necked, often more secretive members of this family. Bitterns usually frequent reed beds and similar marshy areas, and feed on amphibians, reptiles, insects, and fish. File photo taken last May. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Great focus in this shot of the bittern, Dana! Has to be some contortionist to hang onto the stem like that. Either that, or it's double jointed. And, birds of this species that have gone through a divorce are known as Bitter Bitterns.
