Description

Nostalgia serves no purpose in his life, but he shares space with one who cherishes the past: simpler times as his residential companion says. He has made attempts to understand his housemate’s predispositions. Simpler times he thinks, hearing the echo of his housemate’s voice. Born shortly before humankind’s first steps on the moon, history is a thing—for him—of rockets and the cold/hard vacuum of interplanetary space. Two world wars (one a mere sequel of the one before) have been relegated tales of heroism and tyranny; but he cannot recall some element of that past (some moment of consciousness) defined by events he has only read or seen on television. The past—like his house-mate—has taken residence in a living room, dining room and kitchen three stories above Contrition Street, where Ecuadorians and Estonians commingle in ways possible only in this part of the city. The past—his housemate’s most cherished companion—greets him from the pages of magazines; they are sweet with the smells of oxidation: the slow burn of paper exposed to air. He laughs at the sight of old advertisements. He cringes at differences in aesthetics. Nostalgia serves no purpose in his life, and he has no love for the milk tablets, or book reviews contemporary to the faded days before yesterday, but at times (like these, on a slow and sultry Saturday afternoon) his roommate’s preference for near-ancient times calls to him from leaves of oxidizing paper. *** *** I don’t know who this character is, but it is funny how he looks exactly like Corey; I took this picture today, as Corey was looking through a classic magazine. I changed the magazine cover and the advertisement on the back; I heightened the sense of ambient light and darkened the shadows, rendering Corey into someone who lives in another world. Which world, I don’t know…but Kafka is a part of its literary history, and Mammorex is a part of it too. In a sense, this is a back-handed dedication to Corey, since he was kind enough to model for me, somewhere between marveling at old ads for cigarettes and eating a bowl of cream of potato soup. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting, and I hope to get back to commenting and catching up as soon as possible.

Wonderful image and fascinating articles! I can't quite read the small print which is usually legal gobbledygook but looks more interesting here. I'm going to guess at the words I can't make out and say it is "Why posting Corey's pics is such a fun thing for Chip to do" Love the question on the advert. Straight and to the point. Thanks for the chuckles. Great portrait of Corey and postwork!

Brilliant post work and a clever piece of writing, as ever!! He does look tired, like you do after an op, but great to see him now it's over.

According to Google, Mammorex might have other side effects too! Great photo manipulation here, especially the light. I wonder what alternate article Corey is reading? He does look quite intense...

I'm delighted to see all those books. I have them all over my house in all corners and I even have a bookcase in my office filled with all sorts of volumes. He's looking well and I applaud the flip-flops. Perfect footwear. :-)

i like how you changed "Life" to "File". I saw that done once before many years ago when Life was still a popular weekly magazine. Great job.

Spectacular capture of Corey, my friend. When my kids were born, I counted the fingers & toes and as many times as I talk to my kids and grandkids, on the phone, it is the visual look that I really know that they are well. Corey had major heart surgery and you stepped in with proxy posting and health updates. But now that I can see Corey, with my own eyes, through your camera lens, now I know that he is truly on the road to recovery. Thanks Chip – you are a good friend. Dana

Great job on the photo manipulation, it is very convincing - I had to check myself before accepting it as real. But I am glad to hear and see that Corey is up and about again. Sporting an iced tea no less. I really do like this setting as it speaks to many of the good things in life (no doubt the true name of Corey's magazine) including energy, knowledge and passion. And somehow, I've always pictured Corey in a room full of books. But really, is there such a thing as too much cloning? We in the Mad Scientist Lobby say no. When you find a best friend (or lover or kool-aid drinking political volunteer/labour-union-buster), make as many duplicates as you can.
