Description

I am back to my trip to New York last spring. This image was taken as the plane took off from Houston Airport. It is of the Houston Ship Channel. Houston is recognized worldwide for its energy industry--particularly for oil and gas That's probably not news to many, but it is nice to read that renewable energy sources--wind and solar--are also growing economic bases in Houston. Houston Ship Channel is part of the Port of Houston and is one of the busiest sea ports in the US. It is a natural watercourse that has been widened and deepened by dredging the Buffalo Bayou (which has been in use for moving goods since 1836) and the Galveston Bay. It is periodically widened and deepened to accommodate larger ships. Islands are formed in the channel from this process and are turned into bird islands. Not surprisingly the channel is not the safest place to live with a recent study suggesting that there is a higher rate of leukemia among children living within two miles of the channel. (Wikipedia) As always, even if I don't always say it, thanks for viewing and for any comments and favs. I really appreciate it!
