Description

the ornate entrance to Fonthill Park, Wiltshire., the arch has two seperate houses in it one at each end. Although the park is now part of the estate is now in the hands of the Morrison family (lord Margadale) it was once the parkland which contained the palatial house known as Splendens the creation of William Beckford, who went on to build Fonthill Abbey. a couple of miles from here. The man was a complete eccentric and built the abbey with a ridiculously high tower, specifically built so that he could view another mansion of his in Bath. Needless to say the tower was so completely out of proportion to the rest of the building that it totally collapsed in a short time. the ruins are still visible, and as a boy scout i used to camp in the grounds. Sad to say it is now in private hands and inaccessible to the public.
