Description

The engines were Rolls-Royce Griffons with 13 ft (4 m)-diameter contra-rotating propellors, creating a distinctive engine noise and adding high-tone deafness to the hazards of the pilots. After evaluating four RAF MR.2s in 1953, the South African Air Force ordered 8 aircraft to replace the Short Sunderland in maritime patrol duties. Some minor modifications were required for South African conditions and the resulting aircraft became the MR.3. These Shackletons remained in maritime patrol service with 35 Squadron SAAF up to November 1984. Wikipedia I miss the sound of these in the Cape Town skies... Clive

I am still amazed that I continue to find your plane pics most attractive, when I have no interest in aircraft!

Russia has a large bomber that has props of the same nature.excellent capture.I miss the aircraft traffic to the Grand Prairie Naval air station which moved to other bases

Very cool photo! Like the way the props are lined up. I know what you mean about missing a distinctive aircraft's sound. Around here it was the old Argus maritime patrol planes (based on the Bristol Britannia airframe). The plane Richardphotos refers to is likely the Tu-95 Bear.

Thanks to Tara I don't have to wonder what it sounds like, but four at once would be awesome. After going to her link I'm wondering just how I could mount one of those on my Jeep...ha ha! Great photo and very fitting that they were named Shackletons!

Wonderful POV for this shot. I haven't seen this set up since tracking Soviet long range bomber/reconnaissance planes that NATO called the "bear". Dana
