Description
The church of St Peter and St Paul at Chaldon in Surrey houses what is reputed to be the best example of Norman mural work to be found in any church in England. Its title The purgatorial ladder or the ladder of souls with the seven deadly sins. It dates from the 12th century and depicts groups of small men and women either ascending into heaven or descending into hell, an angel is waiting to assist souls into heaven, while below demons and terrible torments await. It was discovered under heavy coatings of whitewash.
