Description
This is the jute mill in the Camerini model mill town at Piazzola sul Brenta, Padova. Currently they are finishing the industrial archaeology recovery. The mill will become an area for events and/or shops, while the buildings on the right are already sold as apartments and shops. The jute mill was part of an industrial complex producing a whole range of products, including bricks, sulphuric acid, fertilizers, jute and silk.
Jute is a long, soft, shiny vegetable fibre that can be spun into coarse, strong threads. It is produced from plants in the genus Corchorus. Jute is one of the most affordable natural fibres and is second only to cotton in amount produced and variety of uses. The industrial term for jute fibre is raw jute. Jute fibre is often called hessian; jute fabrics are also called hessian cloth and jute sacks are called gunny bags in some European countries. The fabric made from jute is popularly known as burlap in North America.
Originally, a jute mill was a factory for processing jute. The first jute mill was established in Dundee, Scotland. The world's largest jute mill was the Adamjee Jute Mills at Narayanganj in Bangladesh. It closed all operations during 2002.
Jute mill is also an obsolete British slang term meaning house of prostitution (whore house).

Wonderful photo here Sandra, and you did a wonderful job in selecting a pov that really shows the whole area. It sounds like this Jute Mill has a rich history and thanks for providing some of it here for us. Honestly I'd never heard the term Jute Mill before now and found this very interesting. So glad their trying to breathe life back into this area and hopefully it will be alive with shops and apartments again soon.

I like the simplicity of this picture, just a few colors, the shadows on the ground. I wonder what caused the granularity of the picture.
